Our Practical Tips

26 years of field experience — our practical tips to prepare your trip to Egypt

01

When to Visit Egypt?

  • The best time is from October to April: pleasant temperatures between 20 and 30°C, ideal for visiting outdoor sites.
  • November to February: high season, perfect weather, book in advance.
  • March to April: mild spring, fewer tourists than in winter.
  • The Red Sea (Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh) is pleasant year-round, but the waters are warmer from June to October.
02

Documents and Formalities

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months after the return date.
  • Visa mandatory for most nationalities: available on arrival (around 30 USD) or online at egyptonline.visa.gov.eg.
  • Travel insurance recommended, covering medical expenses, repatriation and cancellation.
03

Money and Budget

  • Local currency: Egyptian pound (EGP). Bring dollars or euros to exchange locally.
  • ATMs are available in hotels and city centres.
  • Carry small denominations in Egyptian pounds for tips (drivers, guides, porters).
  • Tipping is an important part of local culture.
  • Bank cards are accepted in major hotels, but cash remains king in souks and small restaurants.
04

Health and Safety

  • Drink only bottled water — never tap water.
  • Avoid ice cubes in non-tourist establishments.
  • Sun protection is essential: hat, SPF 50+ cream, sunglasses.
  • Tourist areas (Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Red Sea) are secure and monitored.
  • Travelling with a licensed operator guarantees local assistance in case of a problem.
05

Culture and Etiquette

  • Egypt is a Muslim country: respect dress codes, especially in mosques (shoulders and knees covered).
  • Egyptians are warm and welcoming — a smile and a few words of Arabic (shukran = thank you) are always appreciated.
  • Bargaining is common in souks — it's part of the game, do it with a smile.
  • Avoid photographing people without their explicit permission.
  • Friday is the day of prayer — some sites may have altered opening hours.
